Memorial Day 1984
In 1998, the Vietnam Unknown Serviceman was disinterred and the remains were subjected to
new DNA testing. On June 30, the Department of Defense announced that they had identified the
reamains as those of LT Michael Blassie, an Air Force pilot who was shot down on May 11, 1972.
The Vietnam crypt on the plaza at the Tomb of the Unknown today remains empty.
